About Us

Day One exists to limit the impact of major trauma and to help patients regain the best quality of life.

Who we are

Day One is a non-profit charity committed to making a positive impact on trauma care in England.

Currently Day One is based in the major trauma centre at Leeds General Infirmary and affiliated to Leeds Cares, however this is just the start. We aim to grow and support other major trauma centres, becoming a national initiative.

We’re not just fundraisers, we’re a group of dedicated medical and legal experts. But most importantly the majority of us have experienced major trauma ourselves. We have been through the highs – and the lows – on the road to recovery, so we understand what a rollercoaster ride it is.

We know that it’s not easy, we know it won’t be fixed overnight, but the right support from Day One can help you through.

The average length of stay for a moderately or severely injured patient has reduced from 21 days to 16

Our mission

There are 24 major adult trauma centres in England where patients can be treated promptly, 24 hours a day, by a full range of specialists, including general, orthopaedic, plastic and vascular surgeons, neurosurgeons and radiologists.

Our aim is to create world-class services for people affected by major trauma through:

  • Supporting patients and their families during their hospital stay
  • Rehabilitation support, preparing patients for a life back at home
  • Supporting staff working through training and education
  • Funding for state-of-the-art medical equipment
  • Carrying out research and development within the major trauma sector

As well as support inside the hospital walls we provide help and advice for patients once they leave hospital. Many have life-threatening injuries, neurological and physical disabilities, and complex medical needs that require long-term care and rehabilitation. Some require support and care for the rest of their lives, but we’ll always be there, from Day One.

Support from Day One

We provide care for patients while they’re in hospital. But many require long-term assistance to help them regain their quality of life. This is what we do.
